Finding your companion in life is the most important thing you can do besides finding Jesus, but in order to meet the right one, you have to know what you are looking for and where to look. Truth is, there are too many options out there.
We live in a time where we have a flow of information. We don’t have to physically go anywhere to find a partner, we can go online, which will give us an ocean of options searching on Facebook and the popular dating websites. If this is how you seek, you are in a dangerous place. If you are seeking a man after Gods own heart, you should narrow your search and look for him where God is!
Most people on the dating websites are not who they say they are, and they might look very much different from the profile picture that you first saw. Looks are deceiving and so are words. There is so much that is fake out there. Something of high value you don’t order online, you would rather do the research before you invest. The Bible says finding a wife is like finding a treasure. You must be willing to invest and pay the price.
When I married my husband 30 years ago we knew that we were made for one another. He knew that I was the treasure God had kept for him, and I knew that he was a man after God’s own heart, not perfect, but a worshipper and a fisher of men. He fitted my list. He loved God, he loved to worship and he was a world traveller! The first time we met was at a camp meeting, next time in a Christian concert where we actually talked about these things, and one year later got married and spend our one year honeymoon hitchhiking around the world!
For some people, It seems like finding their mate is almost impossible. You try to keep the faith high, but it seems like the lights are out and Cinderella has left the ball. You try to match the glass slipper, but since you don’t know where to look, you find the two sisters instead of the one that fit the shoe.
It would be so much easier if we all could be like Adam who fell asleep and woke up with a wife. God performed a miracle right there. He took the women from his side and placed her next to Adam under the tree. Consider this: She had been with him all the time, but she had not been visible. She was his better half, but she did not show up before Adam was perfectly at rest. It was not by works, it was all by grace and God did the job!
I have three boys and I will tell them to “get a life before you get a wife”. You need to know what you do before you say “I do”. If God made Eve to be the helper, how would she know what to do unless Adam knew what God had called him to do? She was not there to clean the house or do the laundry, she was there by his side, giving names to the animals, exploring the gifts and the goodness of the Lord.
This blog is dedicated to my husband Christian Hedegaard. The picture on this page is from our wedding on June 11th, 1988. Today we have been married for 30 years, and even though it hasn’t been easy all the way, the “yes” that we gave one another has prevailed. My husband is my One and Only, the only man I have married, because Jesus is our One and Only, the centre cord who binds us together. He gave us His “yes” and told us “It is done” long before we said, “I do”.
The past 30 years has been for good and for better, and even though it started out worse with a lot of spiritual battle, God turned everything around and healed our wounded hearts in a way that only he can do. He poured out his love in our hearts and so it has been there ever since. God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him. This is how it started, and this is how it continues. No matter what life takes us through, marriage is for life.
